English is the language of the colonialist! That was my
stance when I was in form 1 proving how much I hated it
until I discovered a new dimension of English. Obviously,
I hated it because I was unable to master it. Not to
mention the hate that I received back in high school
whenever I tried to practice the language. Out of the blue,
it all changed when the desire to explore English came as
my teacher asked me to join choral speaking and English
sketch competitions. As I glued my ears, I joined those
competitions because language is a piece of art which I
find really beautiful. As a result, I was isolated by my
peers since I was a divergent to them. This is one of the
reasons why Malaysian’s proficiency level is still low as
compared to other developing nations. Due to this kind of
mentality, it has built a wall between individuals and their
success which prohibit them to become the best version of
themselves or even score a job in this capitalistic world.
Then the whispers of realization finally came to my mind
that I am the emperor of my kingdom and a soul full of
courage that brave enough to get out from my comfort
zone. Ignoring the words of hate from my peers, I just
focus on whatever that my heart said. I keep practicing
the language because I know learning is a gradual
process which I believe most of my classmates could not
realize. Due to a deep passion in English language, I have
decided to become an English teacher. My main goal is
not just to teach them the basic grammar rules but it
would be a privilege to instill the love towards the
language hence changing their perspectives towards the
use of English in their daily life. YOUTH DIGEST | 17
