Page 4 - Managers Manual (V1)
P. 4
1. INTRODUCTION
“There is a difference between a Coach and Manager. In a car, Coaches can be compared
to the driver - “They drive (inspire), and steer a car (team) in the direction he/she wants them
to go. Managers are different. They are mechanics. They service the car (team) ensure it
is maintained, fuelled and polished. They know all about the car (team) and can fix every
part and system when things go wrong. If they can’t they will find someone who can. There
is no successful team without a good Manager”.
Mauricio Pochettino (2016) on his change of role at Tottenham Hotspur FC
OVERVIEW
• The aim of this document is to be a working guideline for all managers, new and
experienced.
• To facilitate effective management of Hockey Ireland’s national teams.
• To provide advice, contacts and resources for the use of national team managers
• To facilitate the policy and procedures to be adhered to by all management staff.
• It is not intended to be a definitive document but should be used as a guide and
reference to enable player transition and to establish a cooperative and interactive
environment between squad managers, Hockey Ireland Office and Board of
Directors. To that end input and contributions are welcomed on experiences - on
venues, procedures, difficulties and what you regard as ‘best practice’.
• Many different issues may arise which will and cannot be covered. It is essential
therefore that manager’s adopt a flexible approach to ensure the needs of the team
and Hockey Ireland as the National Governing Body are met.
• It is essential that the safety, health and welfare of players and staff takes primacy in
all decisions.
Ultimately the manager has sole responsibility for all off pitch organisation pertaining to
national squads, excluding team selection.
