Working Smart: Self-Perform Traffic Control Special Contributor: Daniel Rehkamp, Division Safety Manager, USG Shevlin, MN
USG Colorado deploys their own skilled traffic control teams, increasing efficiency, safety and profitability.
An F350 carries twenty-five portable signs, 100 High Vis 28” cones, electronic directional signal board controlled from the cab, and is easily accessible from the onboard ladder.
The operational signal board trailer is operated by a two-person crew. And the signal panel located on the truck has multiple directional paths for traffic control.
USG’s Colorado office was paying $30,000 per month for third party Traffic Control services, so Jason Weeks, Mark Baca and Quinton Taylor came up with a turnkey method to manage traffic that not only reduces costs, but also allows crews to set up traffic control in just half an hour.
With the help of fellow colleagues Randy Hopkin, Jon Neuhalfen and Tona Tancrede, they modified an F350 pickup truck so it could be organized with all the equipment needed to control traffic at even the busiest four-lane intersection. Crews underwent
training to both set-up and perform traffic control, so now two-man crews can be deployed at any time or day to set up and manage traffic in any work zone. This process improves safety as well.
This is another example of how MasTec personnel work together to improve safety and increase profitability. Good job everyone!
