Fast Break
October 2017, Volume 23
Each year for Veteran’s Day, we publish the names of military veterans that work at MasTec. This is one of my favorite editions of the year as we celebrate those who put everything at risk to protect our way of life and the freedoms that we are so lucky to enjoy.
There is one name on our veteran’s list that is posthumous: the founder of our company, Jorge Mas Canosa. He came to the United States when he was 21 years old and joined the military at Ft. Benning, Georgia. He participated in the Bay of Pigs invasion and left the army as a Second Lieutenant.
He went on to work for a company called Church & Tower. My father worked hard and within two years he bought out the owner. When my brother Jorge joined the company, their hard work ethic became widely known. The company tripled in size, merged with Burnup &
Jose’s Corner
Sims, and in 1994 went public under a new name: MasTec.
There is no doubt that the hard work ethic that my father developed in the military played a key role in his success. More importantly my father understood that one of the most precious gifts in life is to live in a free society. He made his life’s work about trying to bring those freedoms to his homeland.
My father was, and my family and I are, deeply indebted to this country for the opportunities it offers all people. We are blessed to live in the greatest nation in the world.
Those that protect our values and freedoms deserve our utmost gratitude and respect. I am proud that today we list over 2,700 veterans that are currently members of the MasTec family. Thank you for your service, for keeping us safe and most importantly for protecting our freedom!
I have no doubt that the military men and women that have worked and continue to work for MasTec play a key role in our success today.
The story that David McCoy sent in (see page 8) caught my attention. He is a veteran parachute-rigger who now works in our Utility Services Group: “Perfection and extreme attention to detail are required and instilled...that put the foundation into what I strive to provide here at MasTec.”
If we can treat all our clients, and our clients’ projects, with perfection and extreme attention to detail, then we can surely be the strongest infrastructure construction company in the world.
