GCSE Food Preparation
and Nutrition
GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition equips students with the knowledge,
understanding and skills to be able to feed themselves and others better: to have
a healthy future lifestyle.
Students develop practical cookery skills and techniques as they explore the
topics of food science, nutrition, food traditions and food safety. It’s a popular,
energetic, exciting course offering essential skills for life through practical and
theory lessons. Students need to have a genuine interest in food and have some
prior cooking skills.
The coursework is called NEA (Non-Examination Assessment). There are 2 NEA
tasks, completed in Year 11. The first is Food Science investigation; the theme is
set by the examination board, which changes each year. The second NEA task
includes a 3-hour practical examination – it’s a bit like ‘Bake Off’ but in exam
conditions! It gives students a chance to showcase their technical skills. Students
produce three suitable dishes in the 3-hour examination.
