At-Need Guide

          What happens when someone dies?

There are two answers to that; the
procedural, and the biological. This is
          about the procedural:

The likelihood is that a person will pass
away at home, in hospital, or at a care
facility. When they pass, a nurse or
doctor must “pronounce” the death, or
recording the time of the event. From
there, the doctor must sign a medical
certificate of death. This ensures that the
cause of death is understood and that
the body may be released to a funeral
home. If the cause of death is accidental,
unnatural, or uncertain, the file will
be referred to the coroners service for
          investigation.

The executor or next of kin meet with a
funeral provider, who then transfers the
remains to their care. After they register
the death with BC Vital Statistics, and
the funeral home will issue the death
certificates for the executor and the
          burial or cremation permit.

From there, it is a matter of what type
of service the family has chosen. A
full funeral in the church with burial
to follow? A direct cremation with no
ceremony - it is a matter of faith or family
          tradition.
