Go Right
People say “remember the good,” but that’s easier said than done. When my mind is given two options, it defaults to the wrong one.
So, on the left I’ll place the sickness, and her tears when she was scared, and on the right, my mother’s smile and the laughter that we shared.
On the left will be the anguish and a heart so full of grief,
and on the right will be the promise that time will bring relief.
On the left I’ll push the tears that keep falling down my face, and on the right a gentle reminder to allow myself some grace.
On the left, I’ll store the fact
I cannot call her on the phone, and on the right will be the gratitude for all the love I’ve known.
I will train my own brain each morning and night to steer roving thoughts from the left to the right.
On the left, the pain will linger forever and a day,
but on the right,
I’ll see the light
and I will find my way.
