A BRIEF HISTORY OF RACING IN EUROPE

It is highly likely that sighthound racing took place on specially designed tracks before
1900. In England, the cradle of this sport, the first sighthound race behind an artificial

hare, which was propelled mechanically, is said to have taken place in 1876. However,
regular racing did not begin until 1926, when the Greyhound Racing Association was
founded.

England, although the cradle of the sport, will not be

discussed further here. There are two reasons for this:
the sport has developed on a professional basis there, as
opposed to its amateur status in Europe. In addition, as
far as we know, there are and were no Sloughis active
on the racetrack in England. Because England is
important, we have chosen to include a contribution

that gives a good picture of that time. It is an article
about a very famous Greyhound, Mick the Miller, and his
lesser-known brother Macoma (this issue page 14).
