Editor’s note: There was no DNA test available then, and at the time of Dukal’s presence
in Switzerland, a rumor alleging he was a crossbreed from Sloughi with Saluki circulated
among Sloughi fanciers in Germany.
Dukal alledgedly came to Switzerland via the USA, but I can debunk one story: Dukal was
not a puppy of Isabella de la Horde d’Or, owned by J. Burchard and S. Müllemann, from a
French breeding that did cross Sloughis with Salukis. Isabella lived in California, in
Alpaugh, a little town in western California where many Saluki owners lived.
In fact, she lived across the street from Gisela Cook-Schmidt, a founder of the Sloughi
Fanciers Association of America who assured me that she never saw Isabella with
puppies.
This is a photo of Isabella; she does not look anything like Dukal’s mother.
