         Frozen wetlands

          The shallow lakes and winding
rivers of Canada’s Old Crow Flats in
          Yukon, northwest Canada, provide
a haven for wildlife – particularly
the migrating herd of caribou on
          which the local Gwich’in natives
depend. The wetlands are also a
          treasure trove of prehistoric fossils
          including mammoths, American
          lions, ground sloths and giant
          beavers. Altered mammoth
          bones dated to between 25-40,000
          years may be Canada’s oldest
          human artifacts.
