Chapter 2 – Fundamentals of Laser Tattoo Removal v1.0
To finish, look at figure 58 below – this shows a typical result after using a carbon dioxide laser on tattoos. Essentially, the ink is replaced with severely scarred skin, which is permanent! This used to be an ‘acceptable’ result, in the olden days.
Figure 59: The final result following CO2 laser treatment of tattoos
– before the modern Q-switched and picosecond lasers were developed.
Improvements in the technique....
Glass slide technique
Research carried out by Mike in 2013 showed that a simple application using a microscope slide can have a significant effect on reliving pain. By simply applying a slide on the skin under firm pressure the patient should feel less pain than without the slide. His results showed that the pain can be up to 50% less than usual (see his published report on this). While the reasons for this is not fully understood it is thought that it may be mostly due to ‘pain gate theory’ which describes how pain can be reduced by simply ‘rubbing’ (compressing) the inflicted area.
