WIND POWER
Goal:
Create scalable green energy production in the
MOK for wholesale delivery to strategic partners.
Why:
Economic development and increased financial
sustainability will be outcomes of this project as
well as reducing reliance on non-renewable
electricity sources which is good for the
environment.
Anticipated Benefit:
Production of clean energy and the introduction
of a new revenue source for the Municipality.
The southwest region of the County of Kings
presents a unique opportunity to produce
renewable wind energy. Our lofty, but we feel
attainable goal for this project is a wind farm that
produces in excess of 50MW. Though dependent on
turbine size and wind speed through the rotor,
most wind turbines have a capacity of 2.5MW and
can produce about 6 million kWh in a year (enough
to supply 1,500 homes).
Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, this
project will require significant due diligence.
Specifically, the initial phase of this project will
require a large amount of data collection to let us
know if the project is even feasible. This would
include determining a location and setting up a
meteorological tower to assess the amount of wind
in the area.
Once testing is complete, Council will determine a
way forward. Financial viability for large wind
probably requires an intake program which may or
may not be enabled by the Province and Nova
Scotia Power. The Municipality could explore
funding renewable wind energy as a new revenue
source. Another option could be to seek
development partners.
