Our Story
Incorporated in 1879, the Municipality of the County of Kings (MOK) is situated in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley. The MOK is the third
largest municipal unit in Nova Scotia based on our population of 47,404. and assessments The MOK is a part of the ‘Valley Region’ which is
enclosed by our North and South mountains and is home to one of the most abundant agricultural regions. Located on the southwest
shore of the Bay of Fundy, the MOK encompasses much of the shoreline of the Minas Basin. Wherever you go in the MOK, you're never
far from the sea, lakes, forests and the pleasures that make living here a joy. The Bay of Fundy is home to the world's highest tides and
Fundy's nutrient-rich waters attract huge numbers of shorebirds as well as fish and whales.
The MOK strives to creates a place people choose to live, work and play. With a thriving economy and a strong, diverse business base,
there are numerous opportunities to establish a business or secure employment in the area. The County of Kings is a special place where
the pace of life is gentler, and where quality of life is matched by quality of livelihood. Our people form the backbone of our identity as a
safe, prosperous, tolerant and progressive area in which to live and do business.
From our farmlands to seashores, the MOK has an abundance of fresh produce available at farmer’s markets and fresh seafood available on
our wharfs. Here you can tantalize your taste buds with a local culinary experience. The MOK is also have a thriving artist and artisan
community. Within our boundaries and throughout the greater Valley you will find more than fifty galleries and museums, five live stage
theatres and a rich tapestry of historic and cultural sites. Some are designed to highlight our rich history and honour our Mi’kmaq First
Nations, Black Loyalists freed after the war of 1812, Acadian farmers, New England Planters, Loyalists, and European immigrants.
Nestled in the midst of our farmland is the Landscape of Grand Pre UNESCO World Heritage site at which hosts in excess of twenty-five
thousand visitors each year. The MOK is home to the largest Air Force Base in Atlantic Canada, 14 Wing Greenwood and are proud to
have a Michelin plant here in Waterville. Our residents enjoy access to unequaled indoor and outdoor recreational facilities and activities.
We boast of the educational opportunities provided by our many regional schools, our Nova Scotia Community College Campus and
Acadia University.
While our scenic landscapes and history make us unique, our people are who make this area feel like home. The MOK id made up of many
diverse communities including seven Villages spread across our fine landscape. Each boasts it’s own fine traits from festivals and events, to
sites to see all year around.
