Oh, my, what hooping and hollering when we were discovered missing from
the house! However, that was nothing to what we had to endure once we
were discovered in the chicken coop eating the feed!
Our farmhouse was situated alongside the main highway that traversed the
southern part of the island from the second largest city, Ponce, to the third
largest, Mayagüez. As it went through town, it was called Calle Luna or
(Street of the Moon). From the farm you could walk up a very long hill on
Calle Luna to the Catholic Hospital run by nuns and then down the hill to the
center of town. There was not a lot of traffic in those days but during
sugarcane harvesting season huge trucks would lumber along taking up the
narrow roadway. The traffic was enough to cause our parents some concern
especially when, at three years of age I discovered that I could open the
vehicle gate in our yard and stroll out into the roadway. I was simply
exploring but my parents thought it was just too dangerous for us.
