Dedication to Natasha
The following stories are dedicated to my daughter, Natasha Reneé. As a
child, when she had difficulty dropping off to sleep, she would ask me to tell
her a story. At first, I told her the few children’s stories that I knew but soon
exhausted my repertoire. Not having a talent for inventing stories, I began to
tell her stories based on our family’s experiences in Puerto Rico and on the
farm in the Midwest. She patiently and good-naturedly listened to these
stories even though I would often repeat them. This led, I am quite certain, to
endless repetitions of much the same stories. It became a joke, then, for her
to ask, “Dad, tell me one of your boring stories?”
On the following pages, many of these boring stories are recorded. A caveat
to all readers who may have some knowledge of the actual facts, these
stories may not resemble reality in any form whatsoever. They are my
recollections of what transpired many years ago in a far off island. All
names have been changed to protect the innocent and guilty alike. I hope you
will enjoy these boring stories but, if you do not, perhaps, you can simply use
them in the manner they were intended, to put a young child to sleep!
