One—Startling Screech
“Little girl. Oh, little girl!” The voice did not sound like a talking bird. It sounded like a talking person. Aimi looked straight ahead and did not see a talking person. Aimi looked to her left and did not see a talking person. Aimi looked to her right and still did not see a talking person. But when Aimi looked behind her, she saw a zoo lady in a zoo
uniform.
“I’m looking for a little girl to have her picture taken with tiny little baby chicks,” said the zoo lady. “Would
you like to have your picture taken?”
“Oh, yes!” cried Aimi. “I would like to have my
picture taken with tiny little baby chicks!”
“Good,” said the zoo lady in the zoo uniform.
“Come with me.” Aimi took Grami’s hand and they followed the zoo lady in the zoo uniform.
“I saw Peacock,” Aimi said as they walked across the grass. “Peacock is very beautiful. Peacock fanned his ‘train’ feathers in a big circle. His feathers have blue and green and gold and copper colors.”
“Peacock is very beautiful,” said the zoo lady in the zoo uniform. “I’m glad Peacock fanned his ‘train’ feathers into a circle so you could see the colors.”
