developed, leading to misunderstanding, hatred and violence as each group attempted to prove that they were correct. However, both groups had really been worshipping idols by being attached to their mental concepts, when, in fact, God is beyond all of these.
There was a similar lack of deeper understanding by the masses when the Prophet Mohammed taught that God is beyond all idols. Because of this misinterpretation, followers destroyed places of worship and brutally massacred people who worshipped God while using forms and symbols.
However, while they were destroying what they felt were idols, they were creating other idols of their own at the very same time. They built mosques, and a mosque without anything in it is still an idol. Removing everything, or the negation of things, also becomes a form in itself.
All people who have renounced idol worship have themselves created idols in one way or another. They have often become degraded by such worship as well, because they became attached to their own physical or mental forms. This obstructs their ability to realize God, Who transcends all form.
