It is not easy to establish peace in the world, or even in people who are inimical towards each other. Even in ordinary circumstances, to bring about peace anywhere requires a mind that can perceive contending parties in a calm and detached manner. Such detachment is only possible when one’s mind has become highly advanced and deeply peaceful itself.
You become a true peacemaker when you discover God within yourself and understand Him to be the underlying reality behind the world. Then when you perform your duties for human beings, when you serve your family, friends, and society at large, you are loving God within them.
As peace grows within your own heart, you realize that all human beings are expressions of God; all are media for God’s Presence. God comes to each of us through both enemies and friends. If He comes as an enemy, it is a greater challenge to love Him. Seeing the Self in all does not mean that practical realities should be ignored. You must always do your utmost to protect yourself from harm. However, if you see your Self in all, you cannot easily become violent, and the world will become a more peaceful place because of it.
When you view your actions in this light, impressions of attachment and hatred do not easily arise. As you push away attachment and hatred, you
