Treading the spiritual path requires that an aspirant walk alone to a great extent and, in so doing, he cannot always harmonize with the wishes of his parents as much as the commandment would seem to imply.
Suppose your parents do not set a good moral example, or forbid you to enter into spiritual practices that would be meaningful to you. Should you, for their sake, destroy your mental peace and eventually become emotionally unstable, constantly giving them and those around you trouble? Or should you disobey their commands, integrate your personality and eventually become a delight to them?
Blind obedience to your parents is not good. Rather, honoring your parents implies possessing profound insight into the goal of life—God- realization—and how to attain it. If you are compelled by virtue to disagree with your parents, you must try not to offend them, but instead convince and persuade them that what you are doing is right. Human beings are not made of stone. Ultimately they may yield to the Truth. If you persist in showing them that the path you are treading is righteous and will eventually bring them much good, their resistance will crumble. They will soften and even begin to encourage your spiritual pursuits.
