48 Mystic pathways through the bible
one of the Upanishads, great Sage Yajnavalkya teaches his wife Maitreyi: “Atmanastu kamaya sarvam priyam bhavati”—“For the sake of the Self, all becomes dear.” What you are actually attempting to love, through your loving sentiments and feelings, is the Self. That Self is the basis of the entire universe. Essentially, it is that Self that everyone yearns to love, because the Self is the ultimate ful llment of love. One actually perceives the Self in all people and objects, and for this reason these become the focus of love. However, when the Self no longer seems to re ect within them, they become meaningless to a person.
Brahmacharya, properly understood, binds one human being to another through an exploration of the deeper planes of feelings that exist within the human heart. It is in those planes where God abides. All human beings are merely symbols of that Divinity. It is only when profound love of God arises that you can truly love other human beings.
Love cannot be con ned to your family or to a few friends. It becomes universal, Cosmic, without a shadow of sentimentality of a lower nature, without a shadow of enslavement to biological instinct or passion. This is the indescribably dynamic love that exists in the heart of Christ, in the heart of Buddha, in the hearts of all Sages and Saints whose love continues to shine as a source of eternal light and power for all.
