Week 1: A Week of Hope
lace your Advent wreath in a special place in your home – you may
Pchoose for it to be the centerpiece on your table for the month of
December. The advent candles remind us of the approaching birthday
of Jesus, the light of the world.
According to tradition, each candle has a special meaning. The first one
is called the candle of hope. People in the Old Testament knew that God
had promised to send a Savior. And we are filled with hope because we
know that Jesus came to Earth on the first Christmas so he could tell
people about God and die for our sins.
What does hope mean? What are some things we hope for?
Light the first candle on your Advent wreath and read aloud Romans
15:13. Then share some ways that you are filled with hope because you
know Jesus. What are you looking forward to this Christmas? How does
Christmas bring you hope? How is “hope in Jesus” different from other
kinds of hope?
Have you heard the phrase, “Jesus is the reason for the season?” Jesus
really is the reason for Christmas. As a family, pray for God to help you
keep Jesus at the center this Advent.
Ideas for this week:
• Look at your Christmas ornaments and find those that
symbolize the “light” of Jesus.
• Think about someone who needs a little hope this Christmas
season. Make a homemade card for them.
• Set out your nativity together and talk about each person –
what were they thinking, feeling and hoping?
