Week 2: A Week of Preparation & Peace
he second candle on an Advent wreath represents preparation. Just
Tas we get our homes and churches ready for Christmas, we also get
our hearts ready for baby Jesus.
What do you do to get ready for Christmas? How do you see your church,
school, and community getting ready for Christmas? What do we do in
our home to get ready for Christmas?
The season of advent is a time to prepare for the coming of Christ. Too
often, we get busy and overwhelmed with activities during December
and lose sight of the real meaning of Christmas. Today, slow down and
look for the gift of peace that Jesus offers.
As a family, brainstorm a list of things you do to get ready for house
guests. Talk about what you would do differently if Jesus were coming
to stay at your house.
Light the first two candles and read aloud Matthew 3:1-3. John the
Baptist, Jesus’ cousin, spread the word that Jesus was on his way. Part of
our preparations for Christmas can include letting other people know
what Christmas is all about-the birth of our Savior.
Read aloud Luke 2:1-7. What did Mary and Joseph do to prepare for the
birth of Jesus? Pray that God will bless your preparations for his son’s
arrival and give your family peace this Christmas season.
Ideas for this week:
• In the midst of this busy month, find an evening to make cocoa
and play a game together as a family.
• Draw names among your family (even if there are only a few of
you!) and then do something nice for that person this week.
• Buy warm socks or blankets and deliver them to a shelter.
