Week 3: A Week of joy
ight the first three candles on your Advent wreath. Do you remember
Lwhat the first two represent? The third candle on an Advent wreath,
usually pink, symbolizes joy. Christmas excitement is building as the
holiday quickly approaches.
How would you define joy? What kinds of things make you feel joyful?
Let each member of the family share what they are most joyful about
this Christmas. Where have you witnessed joy expressed this month?
Read aloud Luke 2:8-20. How did the shepherds first react to the
appearance of the angel? What did the angel tell the shepherds?
The angels made a big announcement on the first Christmas, calling
Jesus’ birth ‘good news’ that would bring ‘great joy.’ Everything we do
to get ready for Christmas can fill us with joy about Jesus if we keep our
focus on Jesus. When we are joyful like the angels, we can help spread
that good news. How can we share the joy of Jesus with others this week?
Ideas for this week:
• Have a family joke-telling night with the goal of sharing a lot of
joy and laughter together.
• Let each child shop for a toy for a child their own age that they
know would bring joy to the other child. Donate the toy to an
organization to distribute.
• Make Christmas cookies and deliver them to neighbors.
