   PHOTOGRAPHY
Understanding how to take quality photos is something you may be surprised to learn that many people don’t know how to do. You always want to use a photo that you are proud to include on your website, social media, or in your portfolio.
STEP ONE - FIND A PLAIN BACKGROUND
Use a white door or wall.
STEP TWO - DIRECT YOUR CLIENT
Help your client with posing. I always look up images for inspiration on how to pose, then create a moodboard so that when you’re taking a photo you can refer to it.
STEP THREE - FIND NATURAL LIGHT
Natural light is always the most flattering when you are indoors. Find your nearest window and make sure you or the client is in front of it. If you have professional lighting, that works as well.
STEP FOUR - ADJUST POSING
Make sure that the hair is placed properly (a piece of hair could ruin the photo), pull the chin forward to create a defined shape and jawline, lift an arm, shake out the hands and let them fall naturally, turn the shoulders, and leave a space in the mouth (almost like a whistle but softer). You may also want to lift up the corner of the eyebrows a little bit as this opens up the eyes and shows off the eyeshadow. Take an extra five minutes to really nail the photo. At the end, your client will be happy that they did it because they’ll have a new great photo of themselves, so it’s worth it for everyone!
HOW TO LIGHTEN PHOTOS
STUDIO LIGHTING
You can use diffused light at the sides of the face, and can also have a reflector to bounce lighting into the eyes (this is a bit more complicated and for professionals).
NATURAL LIGHTING
Use a mirror under your face to bounce light onto your face. The light filters your face in the most flattering way and creates a twinkle in the eyes.
