From Research and Development Consultant’s Desk:
Supporting 21st Century Early Years Learners
Cultivating a diverse range of competencies has never been more vital in
supporting our early years learners to thrive in the modern world. More important
than teaching literacy and maths is the development of social, emotional, cognitive,
and digital skills that enable young learners to navigate a connected and dynamic
environment. To foster critical thinking and problem-solving, EPG strives to
promote curiosity by encouraging children to ask questions, explore, and engage in
trial-and-error. When children build, participate in role-playing, and engage in
storytelling, they stimulate exible thinking and cognitive development.
Small group and large group activities, along with interactions and social play,
assist children in learning to communicate and collaborate with others. Digital
literacy has quickly become a vital component of education but must be
approached with balance. At EPG, screen time is limited to educational content and
apps. Simple coding games are used alongside hands-on activities to introduce
digital skills without overwhelming or overstimulating children.
Innovation is a key contemporary skill fueled by creativity and imagination. Artistic
activities and dramatic play encourage children to think outside the box. Nurturing
social and emotional learning helps children understand their emotions and
establish healthy relationships. A growth mindset, which focuses on developing a
passion for learning, is supported by highlighting effort, teaching resilience, and
framing challenges as learning opportunities. Ultimately, EPG understands that it
takes a village to raise a child and strives to work hand-in-hand with the entire
school community and parents to enhance children’s development of a modern and
well-rounded skill set.
