28 Literacy / Story Week 2
Literacy / Story Week
A day of imagination and wonder. Imagine being a
princess in a castle for the day or surviving the big bad
wolf. Should Jack have sold the cow for money or
accepted the magic beans? Why did Goldilocks enter
the house of the bears? The beauty of fairy tales is
that there is always a happy ending. An ending that
provides children with the safety to be brave, to take
chances, to fully use their imaginations. Emerging into
character and storyline allows children to see what
happens if they make good choices versus making bad
ones. It gives them an opportunity to use their
imaginations to solve problems and nd solutions. This
makes it a powerful part of a child’s development as
they take these skills with them into adulthood. Early
literacy is learning about sounds, words and language.
When it’s fun, it’s easy to be introduced early.
Storytime is a great way to start. At EPG we like to
make storytime an adventure by giving children the
opportunity to explore a story through pictures,
puppets and role play for better comprehension. Using
interactive games like story sequence or match the
sound really makes learning literacy more fun. Good
literacy has been proven to be the key for creating a
strong foundation in social and emotional develoment,
reading and writing. It even affects how children com-
municate and solve problems and is linked to academic
achievement and better productivity as an adult. You
can support literacy development at home by talking
more with your child, singing songs, reading books,
and rhyming. So go on, start off your quality
time with a book and some imagination.
