Teacher is Mr Mokete, a 4 year student at the University of Johannesburg, studying
                              st
                                                                        nd
English, as 1 major and Physical Education as the 2 major. He is Christian by region,
but respects what others choose to believe in. The learners are in a grade 10 class
consisting of 15 girls and 13 boys, ranging from ages 15 – 17-year-old. Most of the

learners in the class are Christians by religion. All the learners stay in flats nearby the
school, which means they walk to and from school. There is a feeding scheme for the

learners. Therefore, this will have an impact on the learners’ concentration levels during

                classes.

                WHERE

The school is in Johannesburg CBD and next to one of the busiest streets, and this
may affect communication between learners and the teacher. To reduce the noise

coming from outside, the class can have only a few windows open. Learners sit in
groups of four, in a manner that allows all learners to be able to see the board and the

                teacher in front.

                WHEN

The lesson will take place on Thursday during the periods after break, at 11:40-12:20,

which will be 40 minutes long.

                WHAT

The lesson will be on writing an Argumentative essay under Writing and Presenting. In
the introduction, learners will give brief explanations on what an essay is, and what

factors are in an argumentative essay. In engaging with content, the teacher will give
learners brief notes to write down on the factors of an argumentative essay: what

register, style and voice to use, and what the introduction, body and conclusion should
have. For classwork, learners will then have to choose a topic from the ones provided
