BMI Body Mass Index
Too much, totally normal or even too little - that is the question when it comes to weight and
BMI. BMI stands for Body Mass Index, i.e. the ratio of body size to weight. For a long time, BMI
was considered the measure of all things when it came to determining overweight.
The only question that actually remains is: how to calculate BMI? It's quite simple. You only
need two values: the height in meters and the body weight in kilograms. To calculate the BMI,
the body weight is divided by the height in meters squared. Sounds complicated, but it is not.
Without a BMI calculator, you can easily calculate BMI in two steps. First, determine the height in
meters squared and now calculate.
BMI table (classification according to WHO)
Underweight: BMI < 18.5
Normal weight: BMI 18.5-24.9
Overweight: BMI 25-29.9
Severe overweight (obesity grade I): BMI 30-34.9
Obesity grade II: BMI 35-39.9
Obesity grade III: BMI > 40
Example: 1st step: 1.70 m (body height) x 1.70 m (body height)
= 2.89 (body height in meters squared).
2nd step: 68 (body face) kg : 2.89 (height in meters squared)
= 23.5 (BMI) PROGRESS TRACKER
The BMI is 23.5
The BMI is now calculated, but what does the number mean? In order to evaluate the Body Mass
Index, there are different classifications, sometimes age and gender are also taken into account.
The most important classification comes from the World Health Organization (WHO) .

However, the ideal weight is not only a question of height and weight; age also plays a role. At
the end of the 1980s, the American National Research Council (NRC) discovered that the ideal
BMI increases with age. In other words, the older you get, the more you can weigh for the best
possible state of health.
The BMI calculation is often used for an initial assessment of weight. But the Body Mass Index
is not the measure of all things. For the majority of people, it gives an initial indication of how
their body weight should be estimated. But it does not take into account physique, muscle or fat
content.
