Economy of the South

          • Agriculture: Plantations and Slaves −White Southerners made living off

the land −Cotton Kingdom – Eli Whitney cotton made slavery more
important, cotton spread west, so slavery increases. The South was still
dependent on the steamship. Railroads existed, but far less than in The

North. Most southerners lived on farms, and enslaved Africans; Cotton
became the most important crop after Ely Whitney’s invention of the
cotton gin. More slaves were now needed to pick the cotton. Slavery
became essential to the South’s economy, because The South believed

slaves were free labor to abuse and barely feed.

                                           Union – North - Liberal

                                 Confederate – South - Conservative

Currently, the Democratic Party are (Liberals) and the
Republican Party are (Conservatives). The Democratic and
Republican parties overwhelmingly dominate national politics in the USA.

The Democratic Party was founded in 1829 and the Republican Party was
founded in 1854. However, pre-Civil War, Northern Democrats and
Republicans were Liberal, Southern Democrats were Conservative.

The Civil War is the most studied and written about episode in U.S.
history. An easier and less confusing means of understanding The Civil

War is to always remember north as Liberal and south as Conservative.

Among the 34 U.S. states in February 1861, seven Southern slave states
individually declared their secession from the U.S. to form the
Confederate States of America, or the South. The Confederacy grew to

          include eleven slave states.
