Huazhong University of Science and Technology,
As a university-based tertiary general hospital, Tongji Hospital ranks top one hospital in Central China . It
is affiliated to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology located in Wuhan
city, and sponsored directly by the National Ministry of Health . Its anesthesia
department was independent from the Department of Surgery in June 1956, and
since then it has become one of the most prestigious anesthesia department in
China, which was designated as National key discipline by ministry of Education
in 2007, and National key clinic specialty by National Ministry of Health in 2010 .
In 2012, anesthesia department initiated the new standardized residential training
pilot program sponsored by the Central Government . Since then, a way of resident
training with Tongji characteristics has gradually developed with constant explora-
tion and improvment .
1 . Historical background
In China, due to historical and economic reasons, doctors received variant
training from 3 to 8 years and accordingly got different degrees from associate diploma to doctorate degree .
After graduation, most of the medical students enter non university-based hospitals to start their residency
training, which makes the personal development and professional ability tightly bundled with the hospitals with
variety of traning levels . However, in China, only tertiary hospitals can provide high quality of medical care
and education . Even though many doctors in the primary and secondary hospitals may have chance to study in a
higher level hospital for several months to one year, the professional ability of doctors from different hospitals
vary hugely . This imbalance of medical resources results in unfair medical care for domestic residency and may
influence the health and welfare of Chinese patients .
At the end of 2013, seven Ministries, including the National Health and Family Planning Commission,
jointly issued the guidlines on the establishment of a Standardized Training System for Residents, which was
formally implemented throughout China in 2014 . So far, standardized training of residents in China has become
the most important part of medical reform and the only way for the growth of young doctors in China . The ob-
jectives of standardized residency training are to improve the comprehensive quality of clinicians and to ensure
the quality of clinical care . It is a decision at the national level to make the training of medical professionals to
meet the growing health needs of the people in China .
As far as the taining in Anesthesiology is concerned, it is a challenging subject which requires fundamental
medical knowledge, clinical experience and sometimes personal talent . However, the development of Anesthesi-
ology education in China has its features .
