CNA Students Visit the Charles Lea Center
The CNA students participated in a field trip to the
Charles Lea Center in Spartanburg, which serves
people with intellectual disabilities and/or chronic
medical conditions. The Center strives to help their
clients live as independently as possible by offering
them training and utilizing some of the latest tech-
nology aids. While at DMTC, our senior students not
only have the opportunity to earn their Certified
Nursing Assistant Certification, but they can also earn their (DSP) Direct Support Pro-
fessional Certification as well, which would allow them to work at a facility such as
the Charles Lea Center. On the field trip, students learned about the flexible work
hours and job opportunities available and also got to visit the hydroponic garden
maintained on site. After completing their class and clinical hours, students took the
CNA test on December 13, and DMTC had 100% pass rate for this certification! They
will take their test for DSP certification on December 16. We wish them good luck in
this final step!
Electricity Students Collaborate to Determine Use of Mystery
Device
Mr. Sparks challenged his Electricity level 2 and 3 students to use their critical thinking
skills to determine the purpose of an unfamiliar device. The only aid they were al-
lowed to use was a DVOM (digital volt ohm meter). The students collaborated by
testing parts with the DVOM, discussing the components, and asking questions. They
finally decided it was some type of timing device controlling 11 separate circuits.
Once they narrowed it down to that,
Mr. Sparks explained that it was a
rotary switch used some decades
ago to outline signs to attract cus-
tomers. After that, one of his stu-
dents constructed a lighting panel to
demonstrate the rotary switch in
action.
