Mindfulness is defined as a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness of the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique. The definition sounds a little bit complicated, but it is really simple and overwhelmingly beneficial to children and adults alike - whether struggling with past trauma, or not. Mindfulness programs for youth, such as the Conscious Discipline training 4WRDMIA hopes to make available to staff at ABF, show promise by decreasing depression, self-hostility, PTSD, anxiety, negative-coping with stress, and improved classroom behavior and discipline, social and academic competence, and attention, mitigating potential negative effects of ACEs.
Based on these facts, 4WRDMIA is eager to move forward with this project. Because each of the three sub-projects incorporates elements of mindfulness, the team is confident the students and teachers will experience life-long benefits.
