               Ocean mat or ocean plait: even a simple ocean mat, such as the one we

               have illustrated and described below, requires a great deal of cordage to
               complete the plait.


               Begin by forming two bights in the centre of the rope (figure 96.1) and
               twist both bights anticlockwise before crossing the crowns of the bights,
               left-hand sided bight over right-hand sided bight (figure 96.2). Now you
               can take the ends diagonally down from top to bottom through the
               centre of the bight. The top right end is first reeved under one, over two,
               under one, then the other end is reeved over one, under one, over one,

               under one, over one (figure 96.3). All that remains to be done now is to
               follow the pattern around one end at a time, working each from bottom
               to top then from top to bottom. After three circuits the whole can be
               worked tight, the ends cut off and hidden under the mat.
