               Clove hitch (turned): used to secure a line to a fixed continuous object

               such as a railing, when a load is applied to both sides of the knot. If a load
               is applied to only one side the knot will slip.


               First take a turn around the object to be secured, with the end positioned
               under the standing part. Put a half hitch on above this turn, by passing the
               end around behind the post and tucking it back under itself (figure 27.1)
               in front of the post. Then pull tight the knot (figure 27.2).
