finally passing the working strand over the rail back to its own side. Then
work the top strand on the other side in the same fashion, then the top
strand from the first side, alternating until the area to be covered is
completed (figure 28). Finish off as you began by whipping the ends to
the rail.

Cockscombing (single-stranded): this is an ideal way of covering a
circular object, because the gaps that naturally occur on the inside are
taken up by the curvature of the object. Cockscombing is comprised quite
simply, of alternate hitches worked backwards and forwards.
