through the middle of the coil, taking hold of the rope near to where it
leaves the cleat. Pull the rope through and twist it (figure 31.3), thereby
forming a coil with a half hitch. Now place the loop that has been
formed over the upper horn of the cleat.

When making a coil in a rope with a fixed end, always work towards the
other end, as this will avoid kinks.
