On warm summer days, George greatly enjoyed being driven along country roads
linking the ancient villages surrounding Peterborough that he had explored as a boy on
his bicycle. As a car passenger, he was always exceedingly cautious of what he
considered to be ‘speed’ (over 40 mph). Although George always maintained that he
had never learned to drive a car, his late wife Joyce observed that she knew for certain
such was not the case. George did, however, admit to riding motorcycles during the war
in both Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Burma (Myanmar).
