those beginning with “Your ancient,” which included, at least “mentor,” “chum,”
“friend,” and “ami.” My favorite closing of all was sent on January 26, 1981: “Uncle
Sam.”
Gary Clendenen PhD (Edin); grew up in Poughkeepsie, N.Y; schooled in
Missouri, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Edinburgh. Taught English, History,
Japanese Literature, and others in Japan for 24 years.
