Patrons

From the inception of the Society in 1946, its Patron has been the Head of the
Country. The Society is justly proud that this honoured tradition continues to this day.

H.E. the Governor of Nyasaland, Sir Edmund Richards (1946-1948)
                                        Sir Geoffrey Colby (1948-1956)
                                        Sir Robert Armitage (1956-1961)
H.E. the Governor General, Sir Glyn Jones (1961-1966)
H.E. the Life President, Dr H. Kamuzu Banda (1966-1994)
H.E. the State President, Dr Bakili Muluzi (1994-2004)
H.E. the State President, Dr Bingu wa Mutharika (2004-2012)
H.E. the State President, Dr Joyce Banda (2012-2014)
H.E. the State President, Prof. A. Peter Mutharika (2014-2020)

In 1945 six local residents met in Blantyre with the objective of forming what became, in
           1946, The Nyasaland Society. These were: G. D. Hayes, W. H. Rangeley, G. W. Nye,
Yusof (Joseph) A. Ishmail, E. C. Peterkins and C. D. Twynham. After independence in
1964, the name of the Society changed from ‘The Nyasaland Society’ to ‘The Society of
           Malaŵi’.

At this time, the Journal changed its appellation from ‘The Nyasaland Journal’ to ‘The
Society of Malaŵi Journal (Historical and Scientific)’. The Journal has remained in
continuous publication since the first issue of January 1948.

The Journal, which is published twice a year, carries articles written by both academics and non-
academics, and covers a wide range of subjects including, but not exclusively, matters historical
           and scientific.

The Society and the Journal’s Honorary Editor(s) do not necessarily associate
themselves with the views and opinions expressed by contributors and
           correspondents.
