Problem #1: Footwork and balance
Drives from Spot Up Situations
The second area where Joel gets a lot of shots from in spot up situations is drives. Joel likes to go left and his efficiency is much higher going that way. He is elite at driving left with a top 5 efficiency in the NBA among players with 50+ drives (all positions). Here are Joel’s stats driving left: 1.139 ppp, 55.8%, 11.4% turnover rate.
While his efficiency going right is much lower, the number of possessions where he drives right is limited so the numbers could be skewed. His overall turnover rate in spot up situations puts him at 303rd in the NBA among players who have made at least 50 drives. So there is definitely a need to clean up some of his turnovers.
Joel drags his pivot foot at times on jabs and got called for it several times this year. This does not seem to be because of a lack of discipline. It looks more like bad balance and his body not being able to stop. Balance seems to be a recurring issue throughout this assessment, and the suggestions made earlier are valid for all of his balance issues (Yoga, basketball yoga, work with Todd Wright...) His shoulders go down too far once he goes, which leads to him falling over and not being able to stop. He also jabs very hard and wide which makes it hard to stay balance. These clips show him moving his feet because he is losing balance. The picture shows how wide and forward he is on his jab.
