Problem #2: Knowing when to drive
 Solution
On top of the suggestions we made before to improve balance, we can work on Joel’s footwork in individual workouts. First, we need to keep his jab shorter and softer with his shoulders back so he does not fall over. Then, we would make those same moves at a lower speed making sure that pivot foot stays planted, gradually increasing the speed all the way to game speed. Whether it is in a workout, a practice, or game (later through video), Joel must be held accountable every time he travels.
Knowing when he should drive or not would limit Joel’s turnovers. A lot of his turnovers come from driving when there is nothing there and quite a bit of time left on the shot clock. People have starting to play him for the drive, and Joel still tries to drive with average efficiency. Here are some examples.
Joel can’t get impatient when people are guarding him for the drive, especially early in the shot clock. It is hard for him to take people and having to make change of direction moves because they cut him off. Just learning when he needs to drive or pass will help him cut those turnovers down. This is another reason why an improvement of his shot would be huge. Once people respect his shot and closeout to take it away, Joel has a rare ability to score in straight line drives for a player his size. These clips show how special he can be.
