  Spot Up and Perimeter Play
Shots out of spot up situations come in second behind post play as most frequent situations Joel find himself in and get shots from. He also comes 2nd in the NBA among bigs in the number of times he finds himself in those situations (4.2 possessions per game). However, his efficiency is very average compared to the rest of the league. Because of the frequency of those situations, improvement in this area would have a huge impact on Joel’s overall efficiency.
Problem #1: Follow through and landing
 Catch and Shoot
His low efficiency in those situations is mostly due to the low efficiency of his jump shots taken from those situations. Let’s look at the numbers when it comes to shooting and more specifically catch and shoot situations. Joel ranks among the bottom 20% in the NBA on catch and shoot efficiency, even though 78% of his shots were unguarded. He shot 30% from 3 during the 2018- 2019 season (down from 30.8% in 2017-2018, and 36.7% in 2016-2017). Joel has nice touch and can shoot mid-range shots and free throws at a very good percentage. He should be able to shoot 3 point shots at a higher percentage, especially catch and shoot shots. If I was working with Joel, the first thing I would do is film him shooting in workouts from every angle so that I could study in slow motion every part of his shot. Some of the minor details are hard to see full speed, especially on a TV angle.
When it comes to tweaking shots, unless the shot needs need to be broken down from the ground up, I like to start with things that can easily be fixed, are basic and that have to do with discipline. With Joel, his follow through and his landing are hurting his percentages and can be fixed without changing anything with his shot. In these clips, he does not stay with his shots and backs up right away instead of sticking his landing. That lack of discipline gets worse when defenders are closing out on Joel.
