Actress Who Broke Color Barrier On Broadway Dies
Mildred J. Smith passed away recently. She is shown in a 1950 film where she played the wife of Sidney Poitier’s character.
Mildred Joanne Smith, who had a short-lived but re- spected acting career, has died at the age of 94, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
She passed away July 19, her family announced.
Mildred starred in 14 Broad- way productions in the 1940s including Men To The Seas, Mamba's Daughters, Forward The Heart and A Long Way From Home.
The African-American actress broke the color barrier in the Broadway production of Beg- gar's Holiday, playing the love interest opposite Alfred Drake, who was white.
She made her lone big screen appearance as Sidney Poitier's wife in 1950 drama No Way Out, which was also his film debut.
But her career came to an abrupt stall in 1952 when Mil- dred suffered injuries that in- cluded a broken back and ribs when the plane she was on crashed on its way to Newark, New Jersey, killing 25 of the 59 passengers on board. After her recovery, Mildred focused on music and starred with Duke Ellington and Billy Stray- horn in the musical Cockles And Champagne in London.
She later worked as an editor for Our World magazine, a black lifestyle publication, be- fore becoming a middle school teacher in White Plains, New York.
Birdman Claims He Had
Nothing To Do With Lil
Wayne’s Bus Getting Shot
The ongoing feud between
Bryan “Birdman” Williams and Lil Wayne took an unexpected turn this summer when reports claimed Birdman and Young Thug were involved in a RICO con- spiracy to kill Wayne. The Cash Money Records head is denying being part of any plot to harm his artist.
An indictment involving the case of Jimmy “PeeWee Roscoe” Winfrey suggested the alleged shooter pulled off the crime in conjunction with Birdman and Thug. Bird- man allegedly got word to Wayne he had nothing to do with the shooting.
Police documents state Win- frey called Birdman’s phone soon after he allegedly fired gunshots at the bus. Some- one in the Cash Money camp is saying both phones were in Birdman’s name, but they are simply company phones that several Cash Money asso- ciates use.
The source adds that the call listed in the indictment was supposedly from a member of Wayne’s team letting Bird- man know Winfrey had been harassing Wayne at a club

earlier that night. Winfrey was connected to Birdman by being Young Thug’s road manager. All three men are also accused of being members of the Bloods gang.
Winfrey has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault, making terroristic threats and acts, criminal dam- age, possession of a firearm by a felon, criminal gang activity, reckless conduct, and dis- charging a weapon near the street. He was denied bond. Neither Birdman nor Thug have been charged with any crime involving the tour bus shooting case.
