AIKENS FUNERAL HOME
MRS. BERTHA NUNNALLY CHENNAULT
Mrs. Bertha Nunnally Chennault departed this life on Saturday, July 25, 2015, at the age of 89, following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held at Thankful Baptist Church in Lincolnton, GA, on Saturday, August 1, 2015, at 2 p. m. Interment will follow in Thankful Baptist Church Cemetery, Lincolnton, GA.
She was born January 25, 1926, in Lincoln County, GA, to the late Martha Ann Nun- nally Matthews and the late George Willie Tate.
She grew up and resided in Lincoln County, where she was joined in matrimony to William Chennault on Octo- ber 2, 1948. After marriage, the couple soon moved to Au- gusta, GA, before ultimately relocating to Tampa, in 1960.
She gave birth to 10 beau- tiful children who became her life’s mission. She dedi- cated her life to mothering and ministering to her family by imparting discipline and Godly wisdom. To assist her husband and support her conviction that “the streets won’t raise my children,” she sought night employment to compliment her husband’s income and yet, be available to her children.
She kept a watchful eye over her children, escorted them to and from school daily, and encouraged in- volvement in school related activities to ensure proper supervision. More impor- tantly, she built close rela- tionships with all of her children’s friends and these relationships have remained throughout the years. She retired from the University of South Florida as a custo- dian after 20 years of dedi- cated service. th
Having attained only a 7 grade education, she was a strong proponent of educa- tion. All of her 10 children re- ceived college degrees. Furthermore, to instill the value of education into the hearts and minds of her 27 grandchildren, she worked 3 extra years beyond retire- ment to provide her own per- sonal $500 educational scholarship to each of them.
To her children, she was everything.
Bertha was preceded in death by: her husband, William Chennault; mother, Martha Nunnally Matthews; father, George Willie Tate; step-father, Charlie Matthews; daughter, Mary DeLois Chennault; sister, Georgia Tate; and a dear cousin, Essie Mae Norman.
