Man Charged With Murder Of Roommate
A 30-year-old man has been arrested and charged with the death of his mother. Police discovered the de- ceased woman when they were called to make a welfare check.
According to the St. Pe- tersburg Police Department, officers went to 5055 3rd Ave. S., on November 5th, at 11:30 a. m., to check on 61-year-old Harriet Owens.
When they arrived, they discovered that she had been

beaten with a fist and an un- known object. Police also found her son, Jontrell Collins, inside the home.
During the investigation, police gathered enough infor- mation to link Collins to the death of his mother.
Collins was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
Police did not release any additional information and the investigation is continu- ing.
On Saturday, July 2, 2022, at approximately 4:47 p. m., uniform patrol officers responded to the Big Oaks Apartments, 1586 Big Oaks Drive, in reference to a shoot- ing. On scene, officers located a 24-year-old male victim in- side an apartment with a gun- shot wound.
Officers secured the loca- tion and rendered aid until emergency medical respon- ders arrived. The victim was transported to Lakeland Re- gional Health, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
On Thursday, August 4, 2022, detectives charged Thomas Anthony Rivera, 24, with second-degree mur- der. Rivera has been in jail since July 3, 2022, after being arrested for tampering with evidence and providing false information to law enforce- ment officers in this case.
Rivera had initially claimed that he had left the apartment he shared with the victim to walk his dog when he heard gunshots, returned to the apartment, and found the victim. He also claimed seeing two men running from the location with guns and fleeing the scene.
THOMAS ANTHONY RIVERA
Video surveillance at the property proved all of the al- legations false. Evidence found at the scene indicated that Rivera was the only per- son in the apartment at the time of the shooting and was in close proximity to the vic- tim when he was killed. It was also determined through ad- ditional witness interviews that Rivera had waited pos- sibly 30 minutes or more to call 9-1-1 for the victim.
This remains an active and open investigation.
Anyone with information related to the case is encour- aged to contact Detective Troy Smith at 863.834.8958; or troy.smith@lakelandgov.net.
