400 Apartments Planned For Riverwalk On Fortune Street
Health Department Seeks Opinions For A Community Health Survey
Everyone who has traveled to and from West Tampa has crossed the Fortune Street Bridge, but few know of its history.
The bridge was named in honor of Fortune Taylor, a former slave and wife of for- mer Hernando County slave, Benjamin Taylor. To- gether, the couple tended or- chards of oranges, guavas, and peaches on the eastern shore of the Hillsborough River in the late 1800s. After Benjamin’s death in 1869, Fortune was granted home- stead to their 33 acres along the east bank of the Hillsbor- ough River on July 1, 1875. Three years later, Tampa Mayor Edward A. Clarke bought some of her land for $252.
Proposed Apartment Complex
The Florida Department of Health for Hillsborough County conducted a county- wide Community Health As- sessment, and is currently requesting feedback. The as- sessment was conducted be- tween October 2015 and April 2016, and included input from key stakeholders and commu- nity residents via a survey, focus groups, and key-infor- mant interviews.
The health status for the
county is presented in the re- port and key priority areas identified for partners and the community to address over the next three to five years.
Visit the website and com- plete a survey to provide input on the report and its findings. The deadline to provide com- ments is Friday, October, 7, 2016.
The survey can be accessed at: http://Hillsborough.flori- dahealth.gov/
Now, that historic property, along with the bridge named in honor of Ms. Taylor, will be the site of a proposed 400 apartment complex.
A developer from Char- lotte, North Carolina has closed on the site and Crescent
Communities paid $8.1 mil- lion for a 5-acre site at 109 West Fortune Street.
The apartment swill be built in two five-story buildings. A six-and-a-half story parking garage will also be part of the development.

New Orleans Developer To Build On Downtown Lot
Mayor Bob Buckhorn
announced that HRI Proper- ties of New Orleans submitted the winning bid for the down- town block the City of Tampa issued a Request for Proposals for on August 2, 2016.

“HRI offered not only a vi- sion that would add to the city’s burgeoning downtown area, but also offered an at- tractive purchase price den- sity, and innovative design.
HRI Building
“We look forward to this
new project joining the rapidly growing Tampa skyline. A liv- able, walkable and pedestrian oriented downtown has been the goal of the Invision Plan and a focus on our work of the last six years.”
HRI is proposing to pay $7.5 million for the downtown block to develop a 21-story building that will include a 223 room Hyatt Centric Hotel, 225 residential units, 7,000 square feet of commercial/re- tail space, and a 408 car garage.
Construction is planned to start third quarter, 2017 with occupancy planned for May 2019.
