Tampa Native Dies Following Illness

A military veteran has died fol- lowing a two-year battle with cancer. Mr. Delaware Lofton, who was 59, was living in Atlanta, Georgia at the time of his death.
A Tampa native, Mr. Lofton at- tended the public schools of Hills- borough County. He played for the Belmont Heights Little League. He graduated from Leto High School in 1974.
His sister, Mrs. Carrie Hurst, said two months after graduation, Mr. Lofton enlisted in the U. S. Air Force, where he served his country for nearly 25 years.
His first assignment took him to Alaska, which was the first of his vis- its to several places throughout the world.
“He was a great brother and my best friend. I am going to really miss him.”
Mrs. Hurst said although diag- nosed with cancer he continued to work up until the end. She visited him in Atlanta the weekend prior to his death. “He went to work that Monday and was hospitalized that Tuesday night. He fought a good
fight, but lost the battle with Pancreatic Cancer on Fri- day, August 8th,” she said.
Mr. Lofton was a sports enthu- siast who had an everlasting love of base- ball and golf. After retiring, he served as a coach in At-

Family Needs Help With Burial
The family of a Tampa man who passed away following a brief illness is in need of assistance. Mr. Joe Brown, 68, died on Sunday, August 9th, while a patient at the James A. Haley Veteran’s Hospital.
His wife, Mrs. Angela Brown, said her husband became ill about two weeks ago. He was admitted to the hospital with an infection and died on Sunday.
Mrs. Brown said he had insur- ance, but he had not had the policy for two years so the claim is being contested.
Mr. Brown was the father of 6 children, and was a retiree. He last
served as a property man- ager for an apartment complex in North Tampa.

brother left, he never thought that he would be gone for a lifetime.
In addition to his sister, Mr. Lofton is survived by his wife, Mrs. Connie Lofton, 3 children, sib- lings, and other family members.
A funeral service was held in At- lanta on Thursday. Honoring his de- sire to return home for his final resting place, a graveside service for Mr. Lofton will be held on Satur- day, August 15th, 3 p.m., at Garden of Memories Cemetery. Wilson’s Fu- neral Home is in charge of handling arrangements.
