Police Launch Investigation After Inmate Dies
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigat- ing the death of an inmate. He was found unresponsive in his cell.
Officials said at approxi- mately 3:48 a.m., Saturday, detention deputies delivered a breakfast tray to the cell of 37- year-old Bruce Ives. The deputies noticed that Ives, who was in a cell by himself, did not wake up to eat.
Deputies entered his cell and found him lying face down on his mattress. Ives did not respond even after deputies shook him and then contacted a nurse to respond to the cell.
The nurse took Ives’ vital signs and noted that his pulse

was weak. Law enforcement administered a shock from the AED machine and began CPR while waiting to transport him. Ives was transported to Florida Hospital Heartland, in Sebring, where he was pro- nounced dead.
A native of Jamaica, Ives had been in jail since February 6, 2015, for 7 counts of viola- tion of probation. He also had a history of being Baker Acted and was most recently Baker Acted on October 21st while in jail.
The Polk County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy and determine the cause of death.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Administrative Investi- gations Section is conducting an internal review, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigations, and the State Attorney’s Office are all conducting independ- ent investigations.
Thousands Of Drug Offenders Released From Prison
Nationally, more than 4,000 inmates who were in federal prison with drug charges were released. Approximately 300 of those inmates were sen- tenced in Florida.
Approximately 120 of those inmates released Sunday were sentenced in Tampa. The early re- lease, known as Drugs Minus 2 because of the number of steps on the federal sentencing guide- lines that were subtracted, is part of an initiative introduced by the U. S. Department of Justice’s “Smart On Crime” Program.
The initiative is expected to save taxpayers mil- lions of dollars. It also includes a retroactive change in sentencing guidelines for drug convic-
tions and an increase in clemency reviews. The program reduces the prison sentence of many of those convicted of drugs in federal prisons.
Officials said approximately 240 individuals sentenced in the U. S. Middle District of Florida meet the criteria for early release. The Middle Dis- trict of Florida includes the area from Fort Myers to the Georgia border.
The plan is to release those who have been in prison the longest who meet a certain criteria.
According to sources, the sudden release of the inmates resulted in the beds at halfway houses fill- ing quickly. This resulted in some of the inmates going home and being placed on house arrest.
Man Dies, 2 Others Injured In Early Morning Accident
One man died and two others were seriously injured as a result of a traffic accident. A good Samaritan helped to pull two survivors from the wreckage.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the accident took place shortly after 1 a.m., Sunday. Three people were riding in a 2006 Ford Mustang, reportedly at a high rate of speed.
The vehicle was traveling eastbound on Front Street, west of Mt. Carmel when the driver lost control in a curve and slid sideways into a tree.
Upon impact, 26-year-old Asa Jovan Abdal- lah, of Valrico, was ejected from the vehicle. He landed approximately 40 feet from the tree. Ab- dallah died at the scene.
Police said Craig Chambers, who lives nearby, heard the crash and came outside. He discovered two occupants still inside the vehicle. Chambers pulled both of them from the vehicle and administered first aid until Hillsborough County Fire Rescue arrived at the scene.
The other two occupants of the vehicle were transported to Tampa General Hospital with life- threatening injuries. They both suffered internal injuries and severe burns, police said.
The names of those two individuals have not been released, pending notification of next of kin. Police said the investigation is continuing and it appears that alcohol may have contributed to the accident.
