The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has arrested an individual for impersonat- ing a law enforcement officer in Hillsborough County and pointing a gun at a man dur- ing the incident.
New Jonm Charles, Sr., 38, is now facing several charges including Imperson- ating a Law Enforcement Of- ficer, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Possession of a Firearm during the Com- mission of a Felony, and Pos- session of a Controlled Substance.
Last Thursday, May 26, 2022, a road rage incident oc- curred between Charles, Sr. and the victim near Busch Boulevard and Dale Mabry Highway N. As a result, Charles, Sr. activated red and blue lights within his ve- hicle causing the victim to pull over. Once the victim stopped his vehicle, Charles, Sr. drove to the driver's side of the victim's vehicle and in- structed the victim to "follow him to the police station,” and pointed a handgun at the victim's head.
In fear for their life, the victim fled and was able to flag down a deputy sheriff who was nearby. HCSO
deputies made contact with Charles, Sr. and the victim in the parking lot of the Ex- press Oil Change.
Deputies arrested Charles, Sr., searched the vehicle, and found a light sys- tem, a black handgun, a bolt action rifle, multiple forms of ammunition, several differ- ent types of false badges and identification cards, a tactical carrier with ballistic plates, three radios, and a black jacket depicting "Sheriff" in gold on the back.
“Impersonating a law en- forcement officer is danger- ous and deceitful and it will not be tolerated,” said Sher- iff Chad Chronister. “If you are ever being pulled over by a car you feel is suspi- cious, turn on your hazard lights, slow down and keep driving until you reach a well- lit area. You can always call 911 to confirm whether or not you are being pulled over by a real law enforcement offi- cer.”
This investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone who be- lieves they may be a victim of Charles Sr., please contact the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office at (813)247- 8200.
