On Tuesday, September 13, 2022, the first trial began for Hillsborough County residents that were accused of election fraud by illegally casting a bal- lot in the 2020 election. They can face a $5,000 fine and ad- ditional prison time.
Six people from Hillsbor- ough County and twenty peo- ple state-wide were arrested by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Florida Office of Election Crimes and
Security at the behest of Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Many of the arrested have claimed that they were allowed to register and received voter registration cards. In 2018, Florida voters approved a bal- lot measure so that the state would automatically restore the voting rights of people with prior felony convictions — ex- cept for people who committed murder or a felony sex offense.
In the case of these for- merly incarcerated citizens, ad- vocates say that the Florida Office of Election Crimes and Security has admitted that the proper vetting materials were not delivered to election offi- cials in time.
